Favoriten, a district in the south of Vienna, has its own thermal sulfur spring, which has been enjoyed by the city's residents since Roman times. The capital's first and only spa opened in the capital in 1974, and in September 2010 the completely refurbished and extended facility will reopen after three years of building work. The new, 75,000 square meter Therme Wien is twice the size of its predecessor, the venerable Kurbad Oberlaa, making it Austria's largest spa. The blueprint of the new spa follows the path of an imaginary river; the various facilities are grouped along its banks. There are saunas, ample space for children to let off steam and quiet zones for anyone looking to relax. The highlights of the new Therme Wien include 26 pools, 24 saunas, a 6,000 square meter wellness area, slides, diving tower, wildwater canal and salt water plunge bath complete with music.
This city wellness center is located in an oasis of parkland surrounded by trees, meadows and the Kurpark - a national monument. The interior design takes its cue from the spa's natural surroundings. The ceilings in the swimming areas are finished with brightly colored panels that reflect the tones of the four seasons, and the 3,000 square meter sauna zone is paneled in timber throughout. The cakes and confectionary on sale at the neighboring Kurkonditerei Oberlaa are the perfect way to replace those lost calories after a swim or a session in the sauna. The Kurkonditorei Oberlaa bakery that supplies all the firm's Vienna branches is also located on site.
