"Depictions of Winter in European Art from Bruegel to Beuys" reveals a surprisingly colorful and versatile side to this season which has provided an inexhaustible source of inspiration for some of the greatest artists that have ever lived. Taking portrayals of the seasons in medieval times as its point of departure, the show's central theme is the emergence of winter landscape painting in Flanders in the 1560s. It also explores changes in artists' approaches to the theme of winter up to the present day.

The exhibition includes works by major painters such as Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Caspar David Friedrich, Francisco de Goya, Anselm Kiefer, Claude Monet, Edvard Munch, Joshua Reynolds, Peter Paul Rubens, Jacob Ruisdael, Alfred Sisley and Sir William Turner. Around 150 paintings and a series of sculptures, tapestries and various porcelain, ivory and silver objects are on show. The loan pieces are sourced from collections in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
