On September 22, 2011 Egon Schiele: Melancholy and Provocation will open at the Leopold Museum with a completely new take on the Schiele masterpieces in the Leopold collection. Rudolf Over a period of several decades, Leopold (1925-2010) and his wife Elisabeth built an unparalleled collection of early Austrian modernist works including the world's greatest selection of paintings by Egon Schiele. The Leopold collection represents Rudolf Leopold's tireless efforts to secure international recognition for Austrian art and Egon Schiele's creative output.
Due to open a month later on October 14, 2011, the second major exhibition at the Leopold Museum will give visitors a rare insight into the depths of the Leopold Collection, presentinga cross section of post-war Austrian and international art. The Excitement Continues will show pieces from the Leopold Museum's holdings alongside works that were transferred to the foundation set up by Rudolf Leopold in 1994. For the first time it will also preview a selection of the many works that have been steadily added to the Leopold family private collection since the museum's foundation. Highlights of the Leopold family's 60-year art collecting odyssey include paintings and sketches by Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, Richard Gerstl and Alfred Kubin. There are also examples of post-1918 work by artists such as Albin Egger-Lienz, Herbert Boeckl and Anton Kolig, and finally 19th century pieces by Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, Friedrich Gauermann and Anton Romako.
